REGULATIONS RELATING TO INSTALLING NEW WINDOWS

More than 1 Square metre windows and you cannot use 3mm.

Check online first.

Any wet area rooms must have safety or laminated because people slip.

Same with doors, or any window directly adjacent to doors, including fanlights above the door.

If the window concerned is within 1 metre (check) of the floor, it also must be safety or laminated.

CORRECTING COUNTERWEIGHT

When doing window repairs, if it is a window with sashcords, that the sashcords will need to be changed with additional counterweights to compensate, using scales to match the sash weight with the weights inside the cavity, otherwise, it will come down of it’s own accord.

You do this by purchasing a roll of lead flashing, roll it as per photo (roll it around TWO short lengths of sashcord rope inside, then pull the rope out). This gives a suitable cavity to slide new ropes through.

Feed the additional weight onto new cord BEFORE the cast iron weight already there.

To install sound reduction glass in double hung windows with sashcords, all relevant sashcords must be cut to reinstall the corrected weights to balance each sash.

A note regarding WINDOW REPAIRS in a timber bottom sash:-

Hack it out FIRST. Up the top of bottom sashes is a recess of about 3mm which you also have to hack clean. Measure your purchase to accommodate this, keeping in mind that the glass will seat right at the bottom of the style, otherwise, you will have a gap at the top, which EVERY home handyman falls in to this trap.

Allow 3 mm less than its width and you should be right.
